Recipe Card Roundup 2016

Since they dated this, I sure hope they do it again next year!

I read about it in the Sunday supplement before the fair and was very excited to try and collect them all.  The first Thursday I wasn't sure what to expect.  I got there around 2:30 the first day and  learned they were a timed distribution.  10:00 am and 4:00 pm.  The first day I was about to be first in line at 4:00, but I volunteer every other day, so I must get them at 10:00 am!

When I returned there was no one was in sight, but I waited and soon a lady arrived with a sign and a stack of recipe cards.

The sign read:

The first recipe was for Strawberry Jam.  When I look at the recipe, it really does not seem any different than a recipe I would use.  I think what makes prize winning Jam is simply prize winning berries.

STRAWBERRY JAM

I was hopeful the other recipes would be more fun to try!

The next one was for Apple Pie.  Offered Saturday & Sunday. I was not able to get there early either day, but I got very lucky.  When I stopped by the little information office inside Creative Activities, the kind gentleman said, "well here's one just sitting here, do you want this one?"  YES!!! Thank You!  I cannot wait to get my hands on some Haralson Apples!  (I will substitute Haralson for Granny Smith)

APPLE PIE

It was important I get to the fair Monday or Tuesday for the Zesty Salsa recipe.  I wanted to give it, along with the ingredients, to complete Mom & Dads Anniversary gift.  Sadly, my ability to get to the fair early was complicated by my hospital visit!  I am fortunate, my friend Gayle got there and picked one up for me....but I also learned that my parents made a trip and picked one up for themselves!  I hope this is good stuff!

ZESTY SALSA

Wednesday I got there in time to meet Dad, Gayle and friends, all getting the Gluten Free Pumpkin Bars.  I think I might try to cut down on how much gluten I consume and see if makes a difference in my general health and skin issues.  Pumpkin bars seem like a good way to test it out!  Michael's girlfriend Kathleen tries to eat gluten free too, so we got n extra one for her!.

GLUTEN FREE PUMPKIN BARS

Friday morning I was at the fair early and got the Irresistible Brownie recipe.  So much for gluten free....  I am excited to try these the next time we play cards...or have a movie night....or have dinner....

IRRESISTIBLE BROWNIES

Truly, the recipe I wanted most of all was the banana bread. I make a very good banana bread, but I am curious what the difference is that makes this one a blue ribbon winner. The one ingredient I hate to use is margarine.  I'm a butter only gal.  Crisco, only when necessary for super soft cookies with lots of spices.  The almond extract is interesting, and I wholeheartedly agree that buttermilk is required.

After making this one I might need to try and enter some baked goods next year.

BANANA BREAD

I will post back here after I have tried these recipes, and if you try any of them out, Id love to hear your comments below!

Three Dog Day!

Rain was forecast, but the storms rolled through early.  Hopefully will stay away for Mom & Dad, who have Bonnie Raitt grandstand tickets tonight!  A part of me hoped for a little rain to cull the herds.  The last three days have set attendance records.

According to my math, only 40,000 people need to go today to break the overall record set in 2014.

I think there were 40,000 people on Judson alone this morning!

First stop, we picked up the scooter to make it more enjoyable for Randy. Who should we run into at the 10:00 am recipe card roundup time, but Gayle and her husband Mark.  They graciously took a family photo.
We're ready to roll!

I completed my recipe card collection
and I will create a Blue Ribbon Recipe Roundup post all its own!

First stops for Randy & Stella were food favorites.  Dog #1 for Randy was the Foot Long hotdog from the AFL-CIO corner stand.

On our way to get Stella the fudge puppy, and pie for me, we ran into this happy couple!  They are helping at the forest this afternoon, and I'm not!

Stella went to get a fudge puppy and Randy I stopped to say hi to this guy.  It was a busy, successful fair!

Stella arrived with her breakfast in hand
And I, of course, got my last pie.  This is a sad, sad, sight.
I have learned I can buy them year round, and order a case in the off season, but I really cannot eat pie every day without the offsetting 5-6 mile walk.  I might try to keep up the walking routine. It really has done this body good!

We stopped up to the Bailey House to renew our "Friends of the Fair" membership and be eligible for a brick drawing, and all the sneak preview events next year.  No time like the present to prepare for the 2017 State Fair!  Mom was busy assisting people with memberships all morning, do we dropped off a State Fair Sod I'll rhubarb berry tipsy pie.  All her Foundation coworkers were envious, so she ran back to Sara's and got a fie pie sampler for the crew.  More pie thumbs up!

Randy and I do not have the proper Norwegian gear to represent at St. Olaf Christmasfest, so we stopped at the Bazaar to get our own this year!  It was too warm to model them so I took a pic of the ones we purchased.  Randy got the darker blue zipper on the left and I got the lighter blue clasp on the right.

Today my only final agenda item was the coliseum.  I realize I never made it around the interior.  It was heating up quickly, so I decided all I really needed was my "Simply Nuts" toffee peanuts.
Armed with two coupons, Stella and I each got a pound of the delicious snack!

I ran into the CHS Miracle of Birth Center to see all the calves.  I was a bit disappointed that they were all stuck in a small pen in the back.  I asked an on site veterinarian, why they were not in the big center ring, and he shared my disappointment, was didn't know why.
I found my "Prince", and checked out the birth board.
Lots of calves, but I was pleased with being there for the first!

My family was taking a shady media break,

and then we were soon on our way for a margarita for mom and Dog #2 for Randy!
Poncho dog, outside the DNR.

Stella ran across the road and got a little boat of Luigi Fries that we all shared.  Basically fluffy breadsticks baked with mozzarella cheese and marinara sauce.

We did not head up the ramp to the Grandstand for shirt shopping this year.  Randy thinks he might have enough for now...???   instead we went for the north end so Randy could get a feel for Giggles (Tim's) Campfire Pavilion for a possible class reunion event next summer.

We passed by Peter's Dogs near the Kidway, and being we had a "coop'n" Randy got Dog #3.  Peters chili dog.  I did have a bite of this one.

On the way, we stopped, one last time, at the Alphabet Forest to say so long to (almost) all my volunteer/coworkers. I also had to pick up my epi pen safety pack!   Dan was stuck trying to get ~to~ the fair.  It was gonna be another busy day!  I hoped to get up later in the day.

Tim and his campfire grill had a very successful fair too.  He thought they'd come close to running out of the Iron Range Meat & Potatoes by days (and fair) end.  While photographing the venue, who should see me, but this blast from our past!  It's been at least five years or more since I've seen the "Mayor of Como Park" Ned Hanna!

Who wouldn't want to have an event here in the summer, or better yet fall?!?

The sky was clouding over, thankfully, but the humidity was oppressive and every now and then we'd have a relieving breeze.

I requested one last cow "photobomb~ortunity" and my family obliged!
I also entered into the Kemps ice cream for a year drawing...it would go nicely with pie.  Just sayin'.

Had to take my annual picture of Randall on Randall Ave. There is a new street sign this year!

Deciding it was time for "lunch" we headed back to the Ball Park to get cheeseburgers and craft beer onion rings.

Mom joined us for a bit at our table, while we contemplated the plans for remains of the day.  Randy had accomplished his fair bucket list, Stella was focused on college preparations and ready to get home to it, and me....well of course there was more to see and do, but this was my last day with my daughter for a while.  We returned the scooter and were on our way out of the gate by 1:30 pm.
I did get a stamp, just in case
We all settled in at home, and Randy & I both crashed for a bit.  When I woke up, Stella and I decided to make a run with most of her stuff to St. Olaf in an effort to get mostly moved in before the rains begin for the next two days.  It was wise.
Thorson Hall, her new home away from home.

Got her moved in by 7 pm, and stopped for dinner on the way back.  It was nice to eat indoors while seated!

And just for the record, I did spend some time each day playing Pokemon Go! In twelve days, I earned 125,000 XP and gained about 10 new Pokemon via hatching eggs and evolution. Got to level 24.  I may not get to level 25 until next year!  Pokemon Go was not really noticeable at the fair.  With or without iphones, there are people who randomly stop in front of you for no reason, and usually in a doorway or curb cut.

One note for 2017:  I must not miss the Llama costume competition in the AgStar Arena!

The predictions of the all time attendance record came in around noon, and here is the almost complete chart.

This has been a fabulous fair season.  I am ready for all the delights of fall in Minnesota and will be looking forward to next year!

Finals Sunday!

I got on the grounds...and got pie,

I knew I missed the morning recipe card distribution, but there was a very nice man in the information office, who, when I asked, offered me one of every card!  Including today's!
I collected an extra set, (so if anyone wants some...) and then connected with Liz right away.  She had some time before her Master Gardener shift started in Ag/Hort, so we did Creative Activities, once more.  I can walk through that building four or five times and not see everything.
This quilt appealed to me, and they were doing glass work demonstrations.

I showed Liz the pickles cakes and noticed some Quilt on a Stick squares I missed the first time.

Love the matroishkas,

and this closet one hits close to home.  The theme was "My life as a Quilter". I thought I had a picture of what next years theme will be, but nope.  I thought it had something to do with food.  I guess it will be a surprise.

Love this cow quilt too!

Liz had never been into the Annex, so we were heading in when I ran into this family!  Sheryl & Scott were the witnesses to my first aid heroics the other day!  They were at the fair five or six days, and this was the first actual encounter!

Their daughter Megan had posted earlier on Facebook, that if anyone found her at the fair they would get a prize.  I won!  Super delicious panda cookie from the dollar store!  Lol.

I took Liz around for all the free samples, soup, wine slushie and the new iced tea vendor.
I love the signs, people would actually attempt to fill a cup?  Funny.

I did warn her against the "dipping" places, even with a pretzel length, I would never dip into the sour cream or mayo dips, not only due to being room temperature, but you know there are double dippers. (The same people that fill their cups at the tea place!)

We got outside just as the parade was going by.  It was fun to catch a glimpse of the Chinese dance school dragons!

We headed up to Fine Art because there was some things I had not seen.  Lots of things, really, but Liz wanted me to see a pencil drawing that looks like a photograph.
As we were admiring it, I heard my name and turned to find a family that I used to care for, ages ago!  Evan on the left is going into 6th grade and Henry is starting second grade.  Henry was always one of my tallest kids!  It was fun to the whole family!
The following are all just art pieces that struck me.

Photograph

Cow

Blanketed deer

Woodcut. Liz remembered doing that back in elementary school.  Mine would never have made it to Fine Art!

Giraffe?

Birds on a box

Lost my marbles!

Trash vs treasure

Love this fish!

This is funny!

This piece was made by Tacoumba Aiken.  He did an art residency at Linwood when Stella was little!

After fine art, I grabbed a foot long hot dog from the booth outside.  This one restored my faith in foot longs.  As I sat on a bench eating my lunch, I was joined by Kathy, who had earlier, been in the Admin building, and was possibly the first non employee to know the previous day's statistics.  They were carefully recorded....using a post it note.  LOL. Saturday, in fact, had set an all time record attendance.  The fair was on pace to surpass the overall total record too.

As I finished up my lunch, I was greeted by this family, working hard to complete their game cards!  Claire & brother Finn were both in Jackie's room upon a time, but we did lots of team teaching in those days.
Finn thinks I live at the fair.  Little does he know my dreams!
Here is Kathy, helping out with little bean bag throwers!

Moms neighbors & friends the Mackey's stopped by!  Bart was coerced into this photo op... By me.  LOL

Another family stopped by (for the second time this year!) but little Annabelle was crashed out both times.  "All Done" is a first baby sign language tool!
Her big brother Matthew was having fun tossing bean bags!

This guy.  We had not worked together as often this year, as in years past.  This would be my last shift, so I asked for a quick pic!
Tom was glad I was feeling and looking a little better than I had the last time he saw me (post hospital visit!)  I hope to work with him again next year!

At one point in a busy photo booth, I looked down at the comments and I reviewed a compliment!  Always nice to get those. I like the "no, we are not related" part!

The gang was working I acquiring seats for the Talent Show finals as Kathy and I finished our shift.  We got word they were already seated in section F, rows 11-12.  That meant Kathy & I had time to run for food and beverages.  Kathy & I were moving fast, heading to margaritas and meat.   I texted to see if anyone needed anything.  Kathy suggested we should go get entrees before we tried to carry drinks, and that was an awesome idea.  We zigged and zagged through the crowds.  Kathy would call out from behind me as we serpentined to assure me she was still there!  We got to the West End, Kathy picked up a maple bacon BLT from the Blue Barn, while I waited for Bang Bang chicken tenders and Bull Bites from Axel's  We bagged up what we could and got a message that "Worlds Greatest" French Fries were requested.  I messaged back if "Fresh" would do and, with an affirmative answer, we veered to the far left side of the booth outside the Midway and got a big bucket.  Kathy expertly pumped ketchup and filled a ziplock bag (that I am always carrying) so with Kathy's hands full and my bags full, we headed for Cafe Caribe for margaritas!  The lines were long and I asked for the large "beergarita" size (that Estella purchased Friday for $8.50). I was informed that I could get a large glass, which was two margaritas....so, not in a mood to argue and super thirsty...I paid $24 for two "double" large margaritas and off we went.

We climbed up the Grandstand ramp to get to our seats without stairs and Kathy was reminded as we passed the spectacle shoppe that she needed to get her free glasses cleaner.  I was in a hurry to find our seats and lighten my load....and drink. So I discouraged her from stopping.

We got to our seats, and this was the food frenzy picture.  Many hands helped!  Kathy was a serpentining rock star. We made it from the northeast end to the west end and back, with food in less than 40 minutes. And it was ~crowded~!

Mom was off getting corn and a pork chop.  I inhaled the bang bang chicken.  They were really good.  I might have shared a bite, but not much.  I did have left over Bull bites that I shared.  Cynthia liked the look of the margarita and (after drinking mine like a glass of water) I offered to run for a second round before showtime.

I passed by the spectacle shoppe, feeling badly I didn't let Kathy stop, requested a cleaning cloth, stuffed it I my pocket and ran down the ramp to the bar.  This time, I made the mistake of going to a different bartender....because his line was shorter.  I even thought twice about it, but time was of the essence.  Sadly, he was not willing to put two in one cup and call it a "large". There is also a "two drink/I.D." policy, posted....so that might have contributed to his reluctance also.  So, with only two small margaritas I returned just in time for the start of the show.
Small vs. large cups. I'm sure it was a better value to get them one at a time, but value was not important to me!

This crew watched a talent packed Show!
Liz joined us a but later.

We get a program printed in about a 9pt. font, that we are always trying to read in the dark!  This year, I took a picture with my phone, so I could enlarge and light it up!

Just before the show started a bucket of cookies arrived via David and made the rounds!
My friend took this picture of a sad cookie on the ground earlier in the day.  This picture says so much!

Mom, Kathy & I decided to get a head start before the rain. Mom had to be back at 8am to volunteer and the judges were still deliberating after four songs to pass the time.

I put my hands in my pockets and found the glasses cloth for Kathy!
I think she forgave me!  And with the rain starting, now it would come in handy!

We exited the fair just as it started to rain.  Texts from family warned of the incoming rain, but we were already in it...

I dropped Kathy off at her house and I stopped to get gas I got a message regarding all the winners.

Preteen division: 1st place was Gabby, an 11 year old opera singer, 2nd place: the Butters sisters, two little Latin dancers and 3rd place: Brody, another amazing little dancer.  I think at age eleven, I was playing in the dirt with Barbies and my brothers G.I.Joes....not singing opera.  I was hoping for my little Mariachi man to win, but the talent was so strong I this category!!

In the Teen division: 1st place was a pianist Amanda Chan, (the only one I picked to win) and 2nd place was another incredible opera singer Lauren Senden.  3rd place was Izzy Cruz, a ukulele player with an original song.  Third place was a toss up in my book.

In the open division we were all surprised by the first place winner,  the cellist, Anne Goetke.  Not that she wasn't very talented, it was just a very unusual piece.  "That's different!"

Second went to the St. Paul dance troupe Elite a Family, who were my picks to win a couple years ago.  They have gotten better with practice and more time together.  Third place was another male opera singer, who was very good and entertaining!

All in all, the judges had a hard job and I thought there wasn't an act that didn't deserve to be there and possibly win!

Only one more day....
