Recipe Card Roundup 2016

Since they dated this, I sure hope they do it again next year!

I read about it in the Sunday supplement before the fair and was very excited to try and collect them all.  The first Thursday I wasn't sure what to expect.  I got there around 2:30 the first day and  learned they were a timed distribution.  10:00 am and 4:00 pm.  The first day I was about to be first in line at 4:00, but I volunteer every other day, so I must get them at 10:00 am!

When I returned there was no one was in sight, but I waited and soon a lady arrived with a sign and a stack of recipe cards.

The sign read:

The first recipe was for Strawberry Jam.  When I look at the recipe, it really does not seem any different than a recipe I would use.  I think what makes prize winning Jam is simply prize winning berries.

STRAWBERRY JAM

I was hopeful the other recipes would be more fun to try!

The next one was for Apple Pie.  Offered Saturday & Sunday. I was not able to get there early either day, but I got very lucky.  When I stopped by the little information office inside Creative Activities, the kind gentleman said, "well here's one just sitting here, do you want this one?"  YES!!! Thank You!  I cannot wait to get my hands on some Haralson Apples!  (I will substitute Haralson for Granny Smith)

It was important I get to the fair Monday or Tuesday for the Zesty Salsa recipe.  I wanted to give it, along with the ingredients, to complete Mom & Dads Anniversary gift.  Sadly, my ability to get to the fair early was complicated by my hospital visit!  I am fortunate, my friend Gayle got there and picked one up for me....but I also learned that my parents made a trip and picked one up for themselves!  I hope this is good stuff!

ZESTY SALSA

Wednesday I got there in time to meet Dad, Gayle and friends, all getting the Gluten Free Pumpkin Bars.  I think I might try to cut down on how much gluten I consume and see if makes a difference in my general health and skin issues.  Pumpkin bars seem like a good way to test it out!  Michael's girlfriend Kathleen tries to eat gluten free too, so we got n extra one for her!.

GLUTEN FREE PUMPKIN BARS

Friday morning I was at the fair early and got the Irresistible Brownie recipe.  So much for gluten free....  I am excited to try these the next time we play cards...or have a movie night....or have dinner....

IRRESISTIBLE BROWNIES

Truly, the recipe I wanted most of all was the banana bread. I make a very good banana bread, but I am curious what the difference is that makes this one a blue ribbon winner. The one ingredient I hate to use is margarine.  I'm a butter only gal.  Crisco, only when necessary for super soft cookies with lots of spices.  The almond extract is interesting, and I wholeheartedly agree that buttermilk is required.

After making this one I might need to try and enter some baked goods next year.

I will post back here after I have tried these recipes, and if you try any of them out, Id love to hear your comments below!
