Wonderful Weather Wednesday!

I had to get over to the grounds to get my next recipe in the Roundup!  Today's offering is gluten free pumpkin bars. Dad was already there, ensuring I would not miss out!  Once we acquired our cards, this crew shows up!
Gayle and her friends Sue and Joey were spending a glorious day at the fair!

This was my day.  No guests, no tours, no agendas other than my own until 3pm!  I knew my niece Katie, her husband Nick and their adorable daughter Mara were down in the Ag/Hort, so I headed there first thing for some snuggles!
There will be a Quale family gathering Friday night while I am working in the forest, so I'm glad to see these guys for a minute, while they are in town!

Been here, done this in Ag/Hort, except for the new floral displays. They change every two days.  Sadly they were closed for judging until noon.  I'd try to get back.  I did walk out the one wing Nancy and I missed yesterday and these displays caught my eye.

I caught this doorway into the building in great light!
I headed over to the International Bazaar for a peek at the colorful vendors!

African,
Irish,
Mexican,
Polish,
Russian
These Matroiskas being my favorites....

After I wandered through, nothing I needed to buy, or eat at this point, I made my way back up to the 4H building to catch the "Arts In" show performed by kids from all over the state, just for the fair.  The schedule varies by day and it's usually when I am volunteering.

As I was walking up Cosgrove, I noticed a woman had fallen to the ground.  I didn't really see what happened, but a crowd was gathering.  I am first aid trained, but not knowing the situation, I asked if they needed first aid, and ran up the hill to the First Aid Center on the corner.  With paramedics led to the scene, I made my way in to find a seat for the show.  Later I would learn, that friends saw me race for help, and then flee the scene.  My friend Sheryl described it as heroesque!  I just did what I could, and hopefully the lady ended up OK. She was (according to friends reports) taken away by ambulance, so I guess I did the right thing.

I got a good seat for the 4H show.
It was called "I'm Ready!" And was great music & dancing with a pirate theme.

Mom let me know Mike Wallace and his Irish Brigade were going to be at the Bazaar stage at 1:15pm. It was past noon, so I had lots to do before I caught his show and returned to the forest.  My current favorite Author/Illustrator team of David LaRochele & Mike Wohnoutka were appearing at the Forest today.  Not sure if I would have time to greet them later, I said hello!
It's "Read & Ride" Day at the fair, so I wanted to get down to Carousel Park for the library activities!  I "Got carded" and played "The price is right" fair style, and kids got to make an old school library check out pocket! There were lots of Minnesota mystery authors and  thief books.  I left with a bag of prizes and some good reading list ideas!
I love this building, but I'm not a fan of any of the food they serve.
I set my sights on Lulu's Public House. Some bull & chicken bites sounded great for lunch, and I was able to find a seat up on the rooftop bar!
The variety was nice, but way too much for one person,
I put the extras in a ziplock to pop in the fridge up in the forest later.  As I wandered the West End Market, I remembered the hot waffle.
I guess there was room for one of those.

As I wandered through the West End, I looked for my Christmas ornament people. I found these beautiful twisted aluminum creations, and there were lots of snowflakes, so I asked him if he had stars.  HE was an older man in a wheelchair, he had a very thick eastern European accent, and he said "I make vor you...one hour."  I trusted the man, paid him and told him I might not get back down here until Thursday.   We'll see!

I found these guys and this years ornament is cute, but does not have the year on it.  I can get it personalized, but I wanted to see what was up in the Merch Mart before I decide.

On my way back up to the Bazaar to catch the Irish Brigade, I ran into these two friends from church!  They were off on a quick Mom & Daughter morning to see and eat some favorites!

I got a front row seat in the glorious sun to watch The Irish Brigade.  This year Ruth's sister connectd them with some grand Irish dancers!

Ruth is a friend from church and she and Mike are still newlyweds!

I was in need of water so I stopped into the Bailey House where Mom was volunteering to fill up with icy cold water and I found a couple salty snacks to keep me from getting dehydrated.

No little friends stopped by to see me today, but some grown up friends did!  Martha  Liz sat and chatted for a bit, and Id be connecting with them later for food, beverages and music!  But just as my shift was ending, this gal came and told me the story of my witnesses heroics earlier in the day!  We snapped a cute pic in my photo booth!

Martha, Liz & I connected and were looking for food when we ran into their Aunt & Uncle sitting outside the food court. I'm sad I did not get a picture of this awesome couple!  Mike, Sara and Carolyn joined us too!

These two ladies were sitting with Martha's family and I thought they knew them!, but no, this is Carol and Kris.  They asked if they could sit here and were told they had to pay a penny.  I think they got a penny's worth (at least) of  entertainment value out of this bunch!

Each group had things to do, so Martha, Liz, Mom & I walked down to Mancini's and they got the porketta pig wings!  Two thumbs up!

We got a treat listening to Gary LaRue singing Mack the Knife on the stage there!

Earlier Martha told me her ice cream intake level was at an all time low, so here the girls filled up with chocolate custard.  This is something I've never tried at Custards Last Stand, under the Grandstand ramp, but again, two thumbs up!

I was hungry, so I picked up a Dimitri's expensively delicious Gyro.  and we ate and walked down to the West End to see our old neighbor and friend John Munson and his new combo Twilight Hours.

They were good, but the amphitheater round was quite loud, so we hung around outside and found other goofy things to do.
Mom said we all looked like we were in pain!

As we were goofing around I remembered I had made a deal with a guy about an ornament, so I went back to find him and sure enough.  He had a funny smile on his face and handed me this beauty!

We wandered through the History Center and I found this picture and wondered if this was Randy's relatives home of the George William Hendrickson's then made our way home.

Tuesdays with Nancy

I left the house early to get to South Minneapolis to pick up my bestie Nancy and get back to the fair!  It was going to be a gorgeous day.

A few stops for cash and coffee and we were on our way in the gate.  First stop was the Ag-Hort building.  I had not entered the place yet, and its one of my favorite stops!

We entered though the evergreen, ever cool Christmas Tree annex.
We saw some beauties, but I was confused by the varieties.  There's a Canaan Fir,
and Frasier Fir, but no Blue Spruce?  I didn't think that Frasiers were a Minnesota varietal, and I've never heard of a Canaan Fir. It's pretty and sturdy for ornaments!  Unlike this adorable, fluffy white pine!

The floral displays surrounding the atrium run the gamut!  Some are quite lovely,
some unique,
some structurally impressive
and others....well...you be the judge!

A "must see: in my book are the gyroscope kaleidoscopes in the center atrium.

Beautiful planters that spin with mounted kaleidoscopes to view them through!

This is hopefully a video of the kaleidoscope!

Walking through the floral wings, (I missed the Gladiolas again this year) there seemed to be a theme "Minnesota, Places to Go, Things to See".  Some of the displays were cute,

some lovely,
Some interesting,

and some just confusing.
Nancy, my gardening guru, informed me...lemons do not grow in Minnesota...and this is a blur ribbon winner?

Next wing was Crop Art!  I love it all, lots of Prince themes this year,

some political,

Pokemon
and some really cool State Fair themes.
Some just about love!

My favorite was this chicken, created as an amateur entry by a St. Olaf guy and rumor has it this stellar chicken was named "Stella"  I actually left an inquiry card to see if it was for sale!

On the way to huge vegetables, we found some cute scarecrows!

In the giant vegetable area, none of the offerings particularly stood out as photogenic, some were a bit decomposed...

This cabbage is in reference to Nancy's hand.

We stopped in the apple wing to pick up the Minnesota apple season guide and indulge in a cider freeze!  A bargain still at $1.50.

We wandered through all the wings and Nancy indulged me and we took advantage of all the photo op stops!

We got some free pollinator seeds here...

Before leaving the Ag/Hort, Nancy renewed her subscription to The Horticulture Society and I was the beneficiary of two new plants....
Not sure if they will survive in my garden...let alone in my bag for a day at the fair.

The live, active, interactive, bee demonstration was in full swing, so I avoided that wing, but snapped a picture of some of the lovely beeswax by-products!
And FYI....

After the fruits, veggies, seeds, flowers and honey, we moved over to the Dairy Building to see the beef, lamb, bacon and butter heads!

We accomplished much before 11am, but now needed sustenance.  Nancy chose the feature product from Chan's Chicken on a stick.
It was just that.
So needing a little something more, she got a yummy soft pretzel.  I got my second foot long hot dog from the longest family owned stand near the DNR and I gotta say...it was not quite as well done and "snappy" as the one I had on the first day.  It might have been my last.

I made a quick stop to pic up my member freebie @ MPR!
I have to remember to return at 2pm Friday to hear Cantus!

Our next plan was finding dogs!
We began the climb to the north end Pet Center and who should we run into but this blast from our past!  I have seen Roxy often in the pas few years, but Nancy has not seen her for probably 35 years!  It was serendipity!

Nancy could not remember if she was a fan of the corn dog or Pronto Pup.
So she decided a taste test was in order.  The lines are always long for the Pronto Pup (the Minnesota State Fair exclusive) Corn dogs are found everywhere.   I saw this sign about the Golden Pronto Pup and it is the 10 thousandth dog sold at the fair.
The employees never know which stand or when it will be served, but the upper echelon does, and apparently there are news crews on site as it s about to go down.  I am not a fan of this particular food item, but if you'd like Pronto Pups for life...watch for a hullabaloo around a stand near the later days of the fair!

Walking north we found the new Sweet Martha's Tent!
There is no line up here, and I was equipped with ziplock bags so Nancy could bring cookies back home to the family!   Nancy takes her cookies very seriously!

Yay Dogs!  It was the perfect day to be at the Pet Center!  All of my friends' favorite dog breed were represented today!

Shepherds for Lisa,
Danes for Ruth,
Shih Zhu for Carole,
Duck tollers for Sara
and Greater Swiss for me!!!
This little cutie smiles on command for her handler!

We wandered back through cute yard furniture
and Big green egg grills.
I found a Christmas gift idea for Randy.
This lawn mower would cover our whole yard in four passes (front ~and~ back!)  Its only $9000.

We lucked upon an ice cream giveaway at the Kemps booth and got photobombed by a cow!
I could not partake in the pink colored ice cream, with my histamine level at an all time high.... and Nancy said that she might not be the exact target demographic for this flavor!  LOL

I don't need to try and win a cow this year, so thenpressure is off here!

I wanted to show Nancy Paul Bunyan, and I heard rumor about a big pile of dog poop photo op.
Sure enough!  Just as we walked in, I found it!  Nancy, yet again, indulged me.  There were two women in front of us, obliviously good friends for a long time like Nancy and I.  After Nancy and I posed with the poo, the one friend (like me) said, "shoot I missed the poo, can we do it again?!?!"  and her friend replied.  "No. just no" .   Nancy has always been my voice of reason too....

Nancy said I should plant this kind of Black Eyed Susan....This photo is just for future reference.

I stopped by the Alphabet Forest and got a picture of these two lovely ladies who keep the forest in tip top shape all morning until I arrive at 3!  LOL

Ms Sue Heather (on the left) was named WCCO Good Neighbor volunteer at the fair this year!  It turns out we have lived parallel lives for many years.  Until we became "Facebook friends" and discovered all our mutual friends, we had no idea!  She and her husband were Lendways regulars and good friends of Iggy & Sharon.  We had to have been there at the same time back in the 90's!

She told me that being "Mrs. Heather" has been disappointing for some as they arrive in the Forest looking for Ms. Heather... LOL

We took a detour through the Creative Activities Annex and at the far end is Kim Norlien, "painter of peace and tranquility".  I had honestly never heard of him, but his artwork is prolific.  What attracted me to his booth as the display of puzzles!
I got this cute summer scene, Nancy found a fall scene and he promised that this adorable snowman would become a puzzle this winter!
Got a signed puzzle and a pic of the artist and were on on our way.

Walking by the Swiss peeler man, (I think he is longest standing State Fair Hawker) these two ladies were mesmerized by a peeler!

Nancy's time with me was coming to an end, so we spent our last half hour admiring all the beautiful baked goods!  I love, love, love all these cookies!

I keep thinking I should try to enter one of these.  This year the C&H people teamed up with Gedney for the 25th anniversary of these pickles at the Fair.

These cakes are impressive!
I love this blue one that represents so much of hat I love about the fair!

Nancy has taught me to really look through the Creative Activities for the most "interesting" entries!  This Carol Burnett theme was blue ribbon winner,
and we really are not sure what these are....

But I do so love this quilt,

and found this cute Pickachu,

and who doesn't need Lederhosen??

I also finally found Ann's beautiful mittens!

Nancy headed back to Moms house to meet her daughter transport home and I headed up to my volunteer post, stopping for my first Kiwanis chocolate malt thus far!

I had a few extra minutes to take some picture of the side of the alphabet forest that I rarely see!  We have the word kitchen, coloring and letter writing stations and make a name necklace!

I had a few friends stop by to visit me in the Forest today!  My buddy Luke (who is also a big preschool kid now) ran into my arms!
Game for anything, he posed for my photo booth with enthusiasm!

One of my current charges and her big sister (and family) stopped up to visit too!   Maggie and my favorite thing to do it read together!  I asked her to come read  story with me...and she promptly sat right down on the ground (like she'd do in group time with me at school!)   I told her she could climb up into a chair nearby and we could read together!
This is why I love it here!!!

I had done quite a bit today for someone who was supposed to be resting and recovering...

I stopped down to Guest Services, which I learned this year is a public area, and its where you go to register complaints about the fair.  No wonder I have ~never~ been there.  What do I possibly have to complain about????   I wanted to assure Alexi I was still alive after my ER visit and I realized I did have a complaint..... the bugs at the fair.

I stopped for the Mike's harder lemonade slushie,
available in The Garden at Chicago Dogs. that I was not allowed to have last night.  The lemonade went straight to my feet....and almost falling asleep at the talent show, Mom & I made it a short night and I got home at a reasonable hour of 9pm and these little plants will hopefully survive until I can get them in the ground....someday after Labor Day
